Open-source AI · on your own machine

The camera that
only works outside.

Six small things to find. The screen goes dark. You go and look. Back home, an AI on your own computer develops your roll.

Try it now

Three ways in.

No account and nothing to install.

Nothing to install. If your computer doesn't run Gemma, the online darkroom writes your quests and develops your photos with Gemma 4, the newest open Gemma, hosted by Google. For full privacy, run Gemma on your own laptop with Ollama (five minute setup).

An 80-second voxel short

Meet Sam.

Day 47 of “just five more minutes.” Then the phone said something new.

Made with open tools: Three.js, open-source Piper voices, and a score written in code. The app shown on screen is the real one.

01

At home

Load the film.

Tell it where you're going. Gemma, an open-weight model on your computer, writes six quests for the season and the light.

“Find a seed, cone or berry still on its plant.”

02

Outside

The screen goes dark.

One quest at a time, read aloud. No preview, no feed. Find it, tap I found it, take one photo, and put the phone away.

Works with no signal at all.

03

Back home

Develop the roll.

Gemma looks at each photo, writes down what it actually sees, then decides whether you found it. Your walk becomes a field journal.

About two minutes a photo. Put the kettle on.

Out of the darkroom

Real notes, unedited.

Written by Gemma 3 (4B) on a laptop CPU. No GPU, no internet.

It's a small model, and it makes mistakes: it called a slug a snail. We left that in. With open weights, you can swap in a bigger model or fine-tune one.

Why open-weight AI

Because the grass
has no signal.

FAQ

Good questions.

What exactly do I do?

Tap Load film to get six things to find. Go outside. Each time you find one, tap I found it and take a photo. At home, open the roll on your computer and tap Develop.

Why can't I see if I got it right straight away?

That's on purpose. Checking every photo on the spot would mean standing on the trail watching a spinner, which is exactly the screen time we're removing. Like film, you find out later.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

Not if Gemma runs on your own computer: then photos never leave your devices. If it doesn't, the online darkroom sends each photo to Gemma 4 hosted by Google to be developed, and this app doesn't store it. You can switch the online darkroom off in Settings. There are no accounts and no analytics either way.

What do I need?

Just a phone. The online darkroom handles the AI for you. If you'd like everything to stay on your own devices, install the free Ollama and the gemma3:4b model on any laptop, no graphics card needed. The quick start takes about five minutes.

What is "glass-free %"?

How much of your walk the screen was off. It's the only number the app keeps.
